In the early 1940s, rural life is good for Calvin Dillard. Living on a small hillside farm, he drives a truck picking up milk from nearby farmers and delivering it to the area creamery. He falls in love with a girl he meets at a barn dance, but as the war rages on in Europe, Calvin's life is interrupted. His number is called and he is drafted into the service. Leaving his new bride behind, Calvin is shipped to Nazi-occupied France. As winter fiercely approaches, and his unit moves north, he is hit by enemy fire and left behind for dead. He is found by a French girl who risks her life to hide him and nurse him back to health. He must now make his way back through the dangerous and treacherous countryside of 1944 Belgium,
